Founded in 1847 by the Mormon Pioneers led by Brigham Young. These settlers began the transformation of the former arid area near the Great Salt Lake by extensively irrigating and cultivating the land. Those same settlers soon branched out and began to create many other settlements throughout the land now know as the state of Utah.
Salt Lake City is the home and headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and Temple Square--one of the most visited sites in the state. Although settled by the Mormon pioneers, today less than half the population of the city are members of the LDS Church.
The transcontinental railroad, mining booms and immigration of early Mormons brought a lot of economic growth to the area in the early years. The city became known as the Crossroads of the West, a nickname that is still attached to the city. Presently two major freeways cross in Salt Lake City--the north/south I-15 freeway and the east/west I-80 freeway. The Salt Lake City International Airport is a Delta hub and offers direct flights to several international destinations.
Salt Lake City has a large developed outdoor recreation tourist industry with is anchored by skiing, snowboarding and related mountain, desert and water sport activities. The city hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics. The city boasts four major ski resorts within 30 minutes of downtown and a total of 14 resorts within a very short drive. The city is laid out in a grid pattern with most streets running north-south and east-west. The center of the grid is the southeast corner of the Temple Square and addresses are based off of compass point distances from that center point.
Salt Lake's climate is known as semi-arid with hot summers and cold, snowy winters. Snow falls average from early November to mid-April. During the cold winter months areas of strong high-pressure over the Salt Lake basin area can lead to air stagnation and thick smog in the valley. Often this lasts for several days up to several weeks and occasionally results in days of the worst air-pollution in the nation until the high pressure is broken up and the air cleans itself up.
The city has its own symphony, ballet, NBA basketball team and, of course, is home to the Mormon Tabernacle Choir along with many other cultural and sports choices.
